Carl V. of Stainless Steel Droppings is running a not to be missed week-long series on Books. For Day Two of the series, Carl posted on two artists who specialize in altered books -- transforming the object of the book and its content into a work of art. And what a splendid and wonderful post it is, (with lots of great photos) featuring two of my favorite altered book artists, Brian Dettmer and Su Blackwell. The photo above is "Alice and Mad Hatter's Tea Party," while the photo below is Brian Dettmer's "Book Autopsies." Dettmer's specialty is surgically carving out sections of a book to reveal the layers in sections. Nothing is added to the book -- only carefully subtracted to create a new visual experience of the text.
As big fans of altered books and sculptural books, Terri and I have posted often on these artists. A quick check of our archives offers posts on the following artists: Susan Kapuscinski Gaylord, Jacqueline Rush Lee, and Daniel Esseg. I also want to suggest a terrific site Book By Its Cover that features gorgeous and unique handmade editions of books.
